- LETTERS, Page 6Upon Sentence of Death
-
- At first, in his discussion of capital punishment, Richard
- M. Cohen gives the impression that he is a bleeding heart, soft
- on murderers because he does not want them to be executed
- (ESSAY, Feb. 13). Later he makes it clear that his solution for
- taking care of murderers is to lock them up for life with no
- hope of release, a cruel fate worse than death. Surely the only
- humane way to protect the public from unreformable violent
- criminals is to execute them speedily and as painlessly as
- possible.

- Cohen would have a murderer sit in a cell contemplating his
- crime for 40 years. What murderers have time for that? They are
- too busy meeting with their court-appointed attorneys and
- planning the many appeals and motions for new trials, not to
- mention watching television and spending time in the prison
- library, shops, counseling sessions and organized physical
- activities. Immoral though it may be, we should execute the
- murderers and help the hungry, homeless and uneducated.
